School Supply Distribution and Psychosocial Activities in Montalban Rizal

S8003399

Last night was a bit stressful coz some of the volunteers backed out the last minute. However, God has planned this before us and made sure we’ll be okay despite the lack of numbers. Today was all about God’s greatness, it’s that with God – NOTHING IS EVER IMPOSSIBLE.

There were 150 kids and only 5 volunteers. Bob, Jin and I handled the kids from 7 up. I think there were around 60-70 inside the room. Although I would have wished for it to be in a smaller groups so that we can really reach out to them. We started the session by talking about the past disasters Ondoy and Pepeng, their experiences and we tried our best to educate them about the past typhoons.

Then we proceeded to drawings, where I told the kids to draw their most unforgettable moment, be it happy or sad. It wasn’t that surprising when most of the drawings we got were about Ondoy, some were really heartbreaking coz it tells the story of their experience, having seen dead bodies floating around, bridge collapsing and their houses being destroyed by the typhoon.

Also, I had the time to talk with at least five parents, while the kids were busy drawing, and told them that this kind of activity is essential for the kids. I found it disturbing that they were pulling the kids out of the psychosocial therapy session. I told them that the kids’ way of showing their inner feelings is thru their drawings, these are the things they don’t usually tell their parents and more importantly, these are the things that need our attention right now. Thank goodness they agreed and didn’t ask for the children again.

All in all, I’d like to say it was a huge success. We were able to give out school supplies to ALL of the children. Congratulations to the organizers of this event, CDRC, Amihan and all others. And to all our donors who continuously support Project 20! You guys are the heroes of these kids!
